The Location & Ethos
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

We chose to hold this residency in Ubud, Bali because this is the place that most of us call home. Bali holds some of Indonesia's richest dance and performance art culture.  The small city of Ubud is considered the spiritual epicenter of Bali, often referred to as "The Island of Gods."

Instead of the typical retreat or festival format that has a hierarchy of organizers, teachers, and attendees, this research residency was designed to create a decentralized exchange of information that moves us beyond the stereotypical teacher-student dynamics. It is part of our attempt to "de-colonize" contact improvisation.
